Unexpected. Just when you think you know Pinot Noir along comes an expression that is both earthy and jammy. Rich aromas of blackberry, cocoa powder and vanilla are layered with flavors of macerated black cherry, tobacco, cedar and black tea. The delight comes with each glass that reveals more complexity. Pair with grilled mackerel, seared duck or a pungent, well-aged hard cheese.
Coming into the third year of drought, the 2015 harvest also had colder weather during flowering which led to a poor fruit set, and small, uneven grape clusters. Yields were down significantly, but quality was excellent. Summer warmth, with no rain, had picking begin in early August and end before October. Most affected were our Pinot Noir yields, but we are pleased with the full range of flavors that a concentrated vintage can provide.
All of our fruit passes through a small de-stemmer and is never crushed. The fruit is harvested by hand with scissors, rather than knives, to prevent bruising and laceration. 70% whole berry fermentation with 4-7 days of cold soak and 15 – 20 days of skin contact account for a deeper color and richer flavor profile in the final wine. A gentle drain and press is followed by a gravity fed racking to barrel. Native inoculation of malolactic fermentation ensues and the wines are then bottled after 10 months in barrel.
This vintage is marked by low yields which resulted in a very concentrated and focused Pinot Noir. Our hallmark dark berry fruit aromas and flavors have a richness and structure this year, that makes this Pinot stand tall.
