2014 Mathilde Russian River Pinot Noir
Russian River Valley
August 12, 2014
Owner Tom Baldacci has a passion for wine! Each vintage we will offer a collection of small production wines specifically chosen by Tom as part of his family tradition to share his discoveries and interest in other well-known wine growing regions. Our Russian River Pinot Noir has pretty, red berry aromas of raspberry jam, just picked strawberry, and sweet vanilla. The graceful flavors of wild strawberry and ripe plum have a touch of sweet oak to complete a long and balanced finish.
We have been working with winemaker, Rolando Herrera since 2003. His passion for winemaking and farming is evident in every bottle. When Tom Baldacci decided that he wanted to add Russian River Valley Pinot Noir to the portfolio, Rolando offered access to his 3-acre parcel that is located in the south western part of the Russian River Valley off of Bloomfield Road. Noted as a cooler part of the AVA with gravel and loam soils, the fruit is known for a more elegant and refined expression of Pinot Noir. The 2014 harvest was on the early side, this year. We had substantial rain in late February and early March which helped offset another dry winter. Starting with bud break through to veraison and finally ending with harvest, everything was ahead of schedule. The Russian River Valley had perfectly ripe clusters, making the quality of this Pinot Noir vintage exceptional.
All of our fruit is hand harvested with scissors rather than knives to prevent bruising and lacerations during the pick. Everything is de-stemmed and never crushed. A 4 – 7 day cold soak coupled with a very high percentage of whole berries throughout the fermentation process brings multi-faceted layers of aroma and flavor. The wine is then drained and pressed and put to barrel for 10 months prior to bottle.
