Owner Tom Baldacci has a passion for wine! Each vintage we will offer a collection of small production wines specifically chosen by Tom as part of his family tradition to share his discoveries and interest in other well-known wine growing regions. Mathilde exhibits Bing cherry, raspberry jam, just picked strawberry, sweet vanilla and an alluring kiss of marmalade. A touch of toffee and minerality complement the fruit on the palate.
We have been working with winemaker, Rolando Herrera since 2003. His passion for winemaking and farming is evident in every bottle. When Tom Baldacci decided that he wanted to add Russian River Valley Pinot Noir to the portfolio, Rolando offered access to his 3-acre parcel that is located in the south western part of the Russian River Valley, off of Bloomfield Road. Noted as a cooler part of the AVA with gravel and loam soils, the fruit is known for a more elegant and refined expression of Pinot Noir.
All of our fruit is hand harvested, with scissors rather than knives to prevent bruising and lacerations during the pick. Everything is de-stemmed and never crushed. A 4 – 7 day cold soak coupled with a very high percentage of whole berries throughout the fermentation process brings multi-faceted layers of aroma and flavor. The wine is then drained and pressed and put to barrel for 10 months prior to bottle.
The 2013 vintage a largely uneventful with an early harvest marked by warm weather and no threat of rain. Quality across the board was outstanding. The white wines have trended towards bright acidity with vibrant flavors and balance. The Indian summer provided ideal weather to prolong harvest which allowed us to pick each block at peak flavor levels and phenolic maturity.
