2013 Allwin Syrah
August 26, 2015
The deep ruby color alerts you to the heft of this wine! This barrel selection of estate Syrah grabs your attention with aromas of ripe blueberry, tobacco and bacon fat which are quickly followed by flavors of black berry fruit, leather and cassis. A robust finish of structured tannin and white pepper make this a steak lover’s dream!
Our Honey B Vineyard is located in the Carneros AVA of the Napa Valley. This cool climate growing region is widely recognized for premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines which are influenced by the cooling effect of the Pacific Ocean combined with summer fog, warm days, and a long, temperate growing season. We have 20.68 acres planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah and Gewürztraminer. The 2013 vintage a largely uneventful with an early harvest marked by warm weather and no threat of rain. Quality across the board was outstanding. The white wines have trended towards bright acidity with vibrant flavors and balance. The Indian summer provided ideal weather to prolong harvest which allowed us to pick each block at peak flavor levels and phenolic maturity.
All of our fruit is hand harvested with scissors rather than knives to prevent bruising and lacerations during the pick. Everything is de-stemmed and never crushed. A longer cold soak coupled with a very high percentage of whole berries throughout the fermentation process brings layers and complexity to the final wine. The Syrah has a greater percentage of “bleed” to bring more concentration while less time on the skins brings more fruit character to the final wine. The wine is racked clean into French oak and aged for 10 months.

At Baldacci this morning, nose of boysenberry, raspberry, blackberry, and a touch of cinnamon stick and cranberry sauce, same on the palate, medium/big body, bottle had been opened a while so some oxidation, inky fruit, not chewy but wine you want to sip and savor, went well with Elizabeth's cupcake, needs 3 years to peak and the score will improve, long finish.
